What was Krasnoyarsk famous for in Paris in 1900?

07.09.18

In 1900, at the world exhibition in Paris was presented a model of the Krasnoyarsk bridge, which, along with the Eiffel tower, was awarded the Grand Prix and the gold medal-"for architectural excellence and excellent technical performance." Krasnoyarsk railway bridge was built by Russian workers and technicians under the guidance of engineer Evgeny Karlovich Knorre in the period from 1895 to 1899. The features of the Yenisei bridge were the largest length of the bridge (907 meters) and the largest in Russia span of farms (144.5 meters) among all built by the time in our country such structures. More than 2000 workers participated in the construction, 15 million rivets were riveted and not a single bolt was used.

Eugene Knorre wrote a book about his offspring, but it came out in a small edition and immediately became a bibliographic rarity. In it the author said: "the bridge over the Yenisei river was laid with a margin of safety of 52 times, so that God and descendants never said resentment to me." The bridge stood for more than a century and withstood the load not only from the trains of the XIX century, but also trains of the XX century, exceeding the weight of its predecessors by 20 times.

From 2002 to 2007, the most famous railway bridge of the Russian Empire was completely dismantled. That is characteristic – on its dismantling it took much more time, than on construction. The bridge is mentioned in the book " Atlas of wonders of the world. Outstanding architectural structures and monuments of all time", published in 1991 in the United States — in the section "Russia", along with the Kremlin and Petrodvorets.

The construction of the bridge is connected with the Museum-estate of merchant G. V. Yudin, which is located on the left bank of the Yenisei, on mount Athos. You can visit it, learn more and touch the history of the city on the Yenisei.
